Resources tackle elder abuse in rainbow communities

Older rainbow and takatāpui New Zealanders can be at greater risk of abuse or neglect, whether because of past discrimination or losing touch with family and support networks.

Two new resources aim to change that, thanks to Hohou Te Rongo Kahukura - Outing Violence with support from the Office for Seniors.

Rainbow Ready

Rainbow Ready – preventing elder abuse is an interactive online module for anyone working with older people, whether in aged care, healthcare or social services.

Based on in-depth community research with older takatāpui (Māori LGBTQ+) and rainbow New Zealanders, the module helps users to understand the unique risks for people in rainbow communities and how to recognise the signs of abuse or neglect.
