COVID-19 Reporting

We have increased the frequency of our reporting on key data to provide more information on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on New Zealand’s people, society and economy.

Monthly Benefits Update

An overview of benefit and supplementary assistance data.

The report compares the present month with the previous month, and the same month last year. Further comparisons can be found in the supporting data file.

The data file provides the figures used to produce the Monthly Benefits Update and now contains COVID-19 Income Relief Payment (CIRP) data by region (Regional Council and Territorial Authority), and by age groups.

Income Support and Wage Subsidy Weekly Update

An overview of income support, including COVID-19 Income Relief Payment data. These reports will be published each Friday.

The data file provides the figures used to produce the Income Support and Wage Subsidy Weekly Update.

Benefit Number Forecasts and Scenarios

The Treasury releases high-level benefit number and expenditure forecasts as part of the Economic and Fiscal Update releases found here.

As part of the Government’s response to COVID-19, MSD is publishing the Budget Economic and Fiscal Update (BEFU) 2020 for:

  • central benefit number forecasts for BEFU 2020 which also feed into the planning for Work and Income
  • two additional scenarios.

MSD’s benefit number forecasts and scenarios are based on The Treasury’s macro-economic forecasts finalised on 30 March 2020 and scenarios published as part of BEFU 2020.
